Death is temporary absence of the eternal Soul from the Body

And fear not them which kill the (the first nature) body, but are NOT ABLE to kill the SOUL (which is ETERNAL): but rather fear HIM (GOD) which is able to destroy BOTH (ETERNAL) SOUL and (RESURRECTED) BODY (IMMORTAL) in hell (ETERNAL LAKE OF FIRE). Revelation 20:14

The interesting declarative in the verse which sometimes is overlooked, is the use of the word "body". And understanding the reference to Hell not as of the temporal place where the disembodied souls of the disobedient are currently imprisoned, but as a reference to that eternal lake of fire expressly referred to in the book of revelation as coming after mortality is swallowed up entirely by immortality, when death, (Hell: ie. the temporal storage of living souls) hell and the grave are then thrown into it.

And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every (BODILY RESURRECTED) man (HUMAN BEING) according to their works.
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death (OF THE SOUL AND BODY REJOINED BY RESURRECTION).
We know all of this because of His express use of the terms "both soul and body".

He confirms when the mortal body is slain by death, the eternal soul of which men have no power to extinguish survives, and hence His exhortation not to fear the death of the mortal body as they begin to follow Jesus and place their absolute trust in God.

However, continuing in His exhortation He remarks to rather fear God and the power of His decision over the final disposition of the "soul and body" together as having been afforded by the resurrection, "both soul and body" together, denotes in that case as we can clearly ascertain, He is referring to the immortal body which everyone receives through resurrection, both of the just and the unjust.

For we know that the first nature body does not necessitate any other disposition as though it were eternal, so that it is not disposed of at first "both together" with the soul, but rather the first disposition of the eternal and ever living soul is separation from the mortal body, and the first nature body is subjected to immediate decomposition, while the living soul eternal is displaced from it and otherwise contained.

Also we are informed that partnership with Jesus in His resurrection through receipt of His Holy Spirit assures us we will "not be hurt by the second death" having a blessed hope of salvation in the body of immortality that will be afforded by HIS universal shout and command from heaven at the ending of mortality all together.

Speaking of which Christ Himself is the first example, of immortality, being the only man presently engaged in His own resurrected "body" of immortality making intercession for the residue of all humanity until the end.

So that all the saints both of all generations before and presently when they die are caught up to Him, and surround His throne, however not yet having received the body of their immortality, in likeness to HIS OWN GLORIOUS BODY.

~ Hebrews 11:40, 12:22,23

As He says in another place, the first ones to believe, are the last ones to receive it, and the last ones who are alive and remaining to His coming are the first to receive the body immortal in likeness to Himself.

So we can be sure in His statement, of Matt 10:28, He is not referring to that place presently existing for the containment of the soul while separated from the body in temporary called hell, because He asserts that the soul survives the killing of the body and we know the mortal body is corrupted by decomposition and not presently thrown into hell, but when He says "soul and body" together, He makes a necessary leap to that judgement that occurs at the rejoining of every soul to a resurrected body, as described in the book of revelation for final disposition of the soul eternal in the body immortal.

He is giving us as believers a very sober instruction for the necessity of embracing a greater concern than death of the mortal body, trusting our souls are saved through faith in Him, and giving a greater regard to that greater concern, the securement of our salvation in the body of our immortality through faithful allegiance and obedience to Christ all our days up to the ending of our mortal body, whether by death, or by the change, at His appearing. Amen!!!
